I always wear a cartridge respirator that is designed to adsorb H2S (I think I got it at Grainger) and combine this with the exhaust fan turned up to high speed. Better safe than sorry.

I do know that H2S is one of the chemicals that the human nose can detect at extremely low concentrations. If If remember right, like the mercaptans in skunk spray it can be detected in the parts per billion range.
