I think your assumptions are reasonable, but I don't see how this explains
that the mid-tone characteristics of a film are related to its highlight
characteristics...

Where did you get that from?

As far as I understand, films are often coated with different emulsions to
'model' toe, mid-tone and highlight behavior individually, which would also
explains the 'hump' in some films and developers.

Maybe, I misunderstood what you meant?
