Dear Bob and Bert, There is always a simple answer to any problem in the surgery or the studio. Sometimes it is the same answer ie " Put your clothes on and get out and take that damned boa constrictor with you! " The only real difference is how long it takes to hose the walls down and who you send the bill to. Artistic hands are a lovely project. I have seen some remarkable pictures that the late Yousef Karsh took of famous persons' hands and wish I could duplicate the tonalities. I have also noticed that dancers can sometimes have such good pose control of their hands that it makes it a pleasure to deal with them. Of course sometimes they just flap about on the ends of the arms like wet fish, but even this is better than the subject who has no idea whatsoever about hands and has to be ' constructed ' into a pose joint by joint. I find a volume of classical painting reproductions with suitable illustrations post-it noted helps me to communicate what I want from the models. It is disconcerting, however, when one of my best models has such veins on the backs of her hands as to preclude any poses with the hands down. I have to resort to hands above head or encased in opera gloves. If the veins get any worse I am going to have to exchange the opera gloves for steel gauntlets....
