I think it was actually an extra who was wearing a watch, not a principle. I've never tried to find the scene. It might be an apocryphal story altogether. Film students get good at seeing mis-matches between shots. They are more common than you would think. Usually something small, a cigarette smoked half way in one shot becomes a full one in the next. Script girl is supposed to catch this stuff but who knows how many shots are between two that are adjacent in the finished movie.
