DEAR TIM,
What you and others have said is true for the majority of Hollywood
product. However, CAROL is very different, appealing to a more mature crowd
and Nominated for 6 Oscars. Another 64 wins & 214 nominations. This is no
Hollywood teen adrenaline/hormone product. It is a very good film. So it is
even more strange that they didn't take the little bit of time and money to get
it right.

Well .... yes, but I think you - with all due respect - no be accounting
for the under-40 crowd in the audience. No, I am not saying things were
always better in the past. No, I did not walk uphill both ways to school

My direct observation of the current crop of teens, 20s, and 30s population
is that they tend to (there are exceptions):
a) Prefer visual input rather than written or listened-to media, unless
it's music they are listening to.
b) They have a much short attention span/focusing time that us Old Relics
(tm)
have.
Taken together, it means that when they're, say, taking pictures with
their phones, everything is done very quickly without much thought given to
composition, aesthetics, or technique.
Taken together, it means that they are not readers - other than in short
text message bursts - but mostly watchers.
Taken together, it means people being unable to focus on movie plotlines for
any length of time. For example, the old "Mission Impossible" TV show always
set up a premise and then had you, the viewer, try to understand how the IM
team was going to pull it off. It required you to focus for a full hour or so.
Today's MI movies pretty much spell it out up front and spend the bulk of film
on action sequences and pretty girls. Why? Because if your target audience
is 16-34, you build movies around what they'll buy - short tidbits of plot,
with tons of visual stimulation in between - typically hyperviolent and
hypersexual.
Note also, that this is a generation of people that much prefer to send text
messages to each other rather than chat on the phone. I have had the experience
of watching young teens sitting together at mall all looking down and texting
with nary a word exchanged.
P.S. We are all subject to b) courtesy of web browsing and nonlinear reading
patterns thereby. I've been noticing that my usually very fast reading
speeds had been going down for some years. So, I decided to really focus
on reading pleasurable novels for a while to get back to full speed.
Since Christmas of 2015, I've (re)read 26 novels and enjoyed them
immensely. I much prefer my imagination to what some drug addled
Hollyweird loser puts on screen ... now I AM showing my age ;)
