Tim,
The Leica III may have had both sizes. One, the 3/8 for export to
England
and the 1/4 for the rest of Europe. I'm sure I had a IIIa in the distant
past that
had the 1/4".

Try eBay search for 'New 1/4" to 3/8" Silver Camera Convert
Screw Adapter for Tripod Monopod T1'. They're $0.99 with
free shipping. I could use an extra one or two as well!

The screw in the case is 3/8". The socket is 1/4".
There's no conversion for that. What you're thinking
of is an adapter that reduces the thread of a 3/8" *socket* down
to 1/4" - which is not helpful in my case.
Apparently the very old IIIs had a 3/8" sockets in their baseplates.
The newer ones - mine is from the 1950s - had 1/4" sockets. If I could
find a new/clean used baseplate, that would solve the problem, but this
seems unlikely, at least at any reasonable price.
