You could just drill out the 1/4" socket in the bottom of the camera, fill it
in with JB Weld epoxy, and then tap it for 3/8". Or is that suggestion just a
little bit too extreme?!

The problem is that this must adapt the camera to a screw in the camera
case. The bottom of the camera must fit flush against the inside of the
case. Going from larger to smaller thread is OK because the entire adapter
screws into the existing hole in the camera but going the other way does NOT
work because the adapter must be larger than the hole it screws into on the
camera.
I know of no device capable of doing this. I suppose its possible to
replace the nut on the camera case with one the right size. I had a look at
my 3C. The camera has a 3/8ths socket and the retaining screw on the case is
the same. I can't tell how the retaining screw is fastened to the case but
it has a couple of small holes in the sides that look like they are for set
screws. If it can be removed perhaps another with the right thread could be
found or a machinist could cut down the threads to the desired size.
Are you absolutely sure the camera does not have a 3/8th socket with
some sort of adapter in it? Most of the adapters I've seen have screwdriver
slots on one end only so if its threaded in wrong way around it may look
like its one solid piece.
