It looks like there may be an insert in there. But if there is, I have
no idea how to remove it. There is no slot as you might expect in
most such adapters - not on either end of the assembly. I see no
evidence of a set screw or other release mechanism either.\
I've tried using a piece of rubber band to increase the friction between
my finger and the top surface of he "adapter", but it refuses to budge.
