Hello all,

We've been discussing chemicals for the past while and it brings to mind a problem that we as group, pure silver photographers who live and die with the chemicals they use are facing... I don't know about the situation in the US and the UK, but in Canada, it is getting harder and harder to get the chemicals we use. The chem section in any photo store is a pittance.. unless you live in NYC or LA, I imagine..... then what about getting the raw chemicals and mixing your own solutions. Until last year, in Montreal we had a chemist who supplied the photographic chemicals you needed, even for color, E-6, and in quantities that you needed, 10 grams, 100ml or but she closed down because of a lack of customers and inventory wasn't moving. Now I buy a 25kg bag of Sodium Thiosulfate from a chemistry factory, but that stores easily and goes quickly. But if I need Amidol???

We are addicted to a bunch of chemicals. Is there a list somewhere that gives the commercial names/product names of the very chemicals that we use, like the example of Arm&Hammer baking soda/Sodium BiCarbonate...... You can get Sodium Thiosdulfate at the swimming pool supplier.... what can you get at the grocery or hardware store, the pharmacy???

Maybe it was on this list, a long time ago or another, seems there was list complied of commercial household chemicals that suited our needs, perhaps in different dilutions but still available.

What mailorder photographic chem houses are there in the US? For me, of course, there is the transborder shipping and restrictions.

Cheers,
Bogdan
