Most computer headphone mics are dynamic if it's not using it's own power
and used with a standard headset.

Ok, I guess I'll have to start figuring out the difference between
condenser and dynamic mics. I don't know what I'm using; it's a
headset mike designed for use with voice input programs like Dragon
Naturally Speaking. I never use the auto level control. I always
set it manually, and let the voice guidance tell me if it's
good. I'll try with the mixer, but I think I've seen the problem
using it through the line in jack.

How little can one pay for a stand-alone mike preamp?
