As I recall, until book 6 you don't actually get the option to leave stuff in
"safe keeping." So, In book 3 if you have the Magic spear, you also have the
Sommerswerd.

Plus, let's be honest here. If Lone Wolf has experienced Book 2 and gotten the
Sommerswerd, he has at least indirectly (and perhaps directly) encountered
Vonatar. He knows that Vonatar is a powerful magician who can summon up lots
of undead (ie, the death-hulks). The Sommerswerd is extremely effective
against both magic (which it can absorb/deflect) and the undead (which it does
double damage against). It is absurd that Lone Wolf who leave behind the
Sommerswerd in favor of the Magic Spear when he knows he's going after Vonatar.
The only reason to do that is sheer cussedness on the part of a player, which
should not be rewarded.

In my opinion, if the Helghast is close enough to strangle you, it's too close
to deploy the Magic Spear.

    Actually thats an interesting point.

By having access to the magic Spear you must also have taken the
Sommerswerd by the time you finished the book (didnt actually think
of that). However, the wording (

    http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/02fotw/discplnz.htm)
implies that you can opt to not take the Sommerswerd on later
non-Grandmaster adventures. So I think we can safely assume that you
could have either the Magic Spear or the Sommerswerd or both for any
book after 02fotw (but before 13tplor).

the only books (01-24) that contain the text "Helghast" are:

    $ grep -ril Helghast * | sed 's#/.*##' | uniq

    02fotw

    03tcok

    08tjoh

    14tcok

    19wb

So it appears the time this issue should be relevant is 03tcok and
    08tjoh as Ben mentioned.

    Heres two problematic sections:

    http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/03tcok/sect328.htm

    http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/03tcok/sect170.htm

Both of which require you to specifically have the Sommerswerd to
    survive an insta-death.

    Another relevant section is

    http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/08tjoh/sect60.htm
which already has a footnote that specifically states "

You should also turn to this number if you possess the Dagger of
Vashna, the Jewelled Mace, or the Magic Spear"

    The section in http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/08tjoh/sect113.htm
is not of concern because you have access to Paido's (magical) sword
so there is no insta-death involved.

Off on another tangent, its possible that you take Paido's (magical)
    sword in

    http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/08tjoh/sect47.htm
and Im not sure if you ever have to return it. Although its never
stated that its to be recorded on your Action Chart (either as a
Weapon or a Special Item). But surely Paido would be willing to
trade his Magical sword for this perfectly good non-magical one
    right? :)

The Magic Spear was never originally
stated to be a weapon-like Special Item - this was added by
Project Aon (refer to the errata).

Based on this change then this would imply you can use it as a
weapon-like Special Item (which is what I suspect you are
asking) in later books up to the Grandmaster series (at which
point it is not listed as a Special Item that is allowed to be
carried over from previous books). You would not be able to use
it as a regular run-of-the-mill Weapon (as its quite clearly
stated to be a Special Item).

In terms of impact on gameplay, the Magic Spear provides no
special combat bonus so the only issue with this I can see would
be if you came across another Helghast (or similar enemy) that
could be damaged by it in books 3-12.

Personally, I cannot see a problem with this unless someone can
raise a situation in which you should be able to fight/avoid a
insta-death due to having access to the Magic Spear.

        Hi all,

From FotW's Section 106 and beyond:

          http://www.projectaon.org/en/xhtml/lw/02fotw/sect106.htm

can you use the Magic Spear as a regular weapon afterward (if
          you keep

it), against regular enemies (even though it is a Special
          Item)?

          Thanks,
