I've never used IE7 so I couldn't speak for what a happens with an XP repair using it. The Product ID key "could" be an issue I guess if a different CD is used and it happens to be one that won't work with certain ID's, but that should be rare because their Product ID's can be used with numerous CD's. I believe they have (or at least use to have) a set amount of Product ID's for millions of CD's. I've only done this with true OEM CD's, not any PC-branded OS CD's. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://www.OrpheusComputing.com http://www.ComputersCustomBuilt.com http://Computer-Hardware-Sales-Consumer-Electronics-Sales.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck M Harris" Hi Peter and all, I'm afraid I have to disagree with these answers somewhat. First, there are reports that having IE7 on the machine will cause problems with a repair install. If you can uninstall IE7 first, then do so. If there aren't any other problems, you can reinstall it later. Other problems I've experienced are: Micosoft not always allowing reactivation with a different disc (and product key) - if this happens, XP may not load properly until this is resolved; I believe M$ has been more generous lately if you tell them that you're simply doing a reinstall/repair install due to some sort of crash. I believe there may be one or two other little problems that could pop up, but I'm not remembering them right now. I know a Dell XP CD will do well on Dell's for this purpose. I know that Gateway and HP have similar XP CDs, but am unsure about their repair install worth.
