I have never gotten infected either, but I've received a lot of infected emails, but knew off the bat not to open the attachments. The big one recently were the PDF files. I scanned them with several anti-vir*s software and none picked them up. For added security, I have Outlook set to convert all mail to plain text. If it looks suspicious, I'm not affected simply by previewing it. I've been on the internet a long time, and I get lots of email, so this doesn't sound right to me. It's correct that the possibility exists, but I've never had a serious infection of any kind, or lost any productivity due to viruses. A properly updated computer with an updated virus program has very little exposure. Absent these basic precautions the risk is very great indeed, and no precaution is adequate.
