Remove your existing Java package via Control Panel's Add/Remove 
Programs, then visit:

http://java.sun.com/getjava/

and click "Download Now". If you prefer Microsoft's version of Java --
 Java Virtual Machine -- then again, remove your existing copy, and 
visit windowsupdate.com.

Some say that the Sun version is more secure, but you may find the 
Microsoft one more compatible with a wider variety of applets.
