HB,

The Windows Security Center is enabled by default and I wouldn't recommend
you disable it. The icon usually only shows in the system tray when the
Windows Security Center is alerting you to something like your antivirus is
out of date, or firewall is disabled, or security updates are available but
not installed yet. When you open the Security Center it should tell you
what security problem it thinks you have. What does it say?

Ed,
The icon is not an alert. Its While holding the curser over the icon,
it says Windows Security Alerts. I didn't install it, and my wife doesn't
recall if she allowed it to. Chances are she did, and doesn't remember.
