Suzanne,

I am going to try deleting the NVRAM for the heck of it...

Your first suggestion on going thru My Computer, gives me no option for Plug
and Play BIOS...hmmmmmmm....will have to check out the MS options
one-by-one.

Actually, I haven't reformatted in ages, and I am thinking along those
lines, but I would like to find the time first to figure out what the heck
is causing the problem.

My neighbor also suggested hooking up an old 2GB hard drive and reformatting
that, instead of my current 80GB hard drive, to see if reformatting will
work. That sounds better, since I would have to do backups again first.

This non-volatile RAM is irritating, especially since Andy says that it
doesn't matter on his computer. BTW Andy, here is what suzanne had posted
before about nvram

NV - or non volatile - ram stores original settings and has to be manually
cleared... the board may have been tested with only 96MB in it, and is
holding that setting in memory... you might want to try taking the battery
off of your cmos chip or if that doesn't work, this page may help you out
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/msdos/how_to_debug_and_clear_th
e_nvram.htm
[url will probably wrap]

Here is another definition:
A general term for memory that keeps its contents when power is removed (or
augmented with a backup battery).

And here is a link to a technical definition <<shaking head with
confusion>>>:
http://www.redwoodsoft.com/~dnelson/tram/tram.html

I *think* I have Wednesday pretty much off, so hopefully I can try it then.

|
| good to see you back ns! I've been wondering if you ever got this
resolved
| or not...
|
| everything I am reading now says that 512 is too much ram for win9x... but
I
| know I had 2/256 sticks in my machine before I went with win2k. [GMan -
I'm
| still gonna do a triple boot soon! 98/2k/xp] even tho I didn't see any
| system speed improvement from 256 to 512.
|
| I still think that this problem is because of NVRAM settings... the
| following is used mainly to fix shutdown issues with 98, but try it
| anyhow... can't hurt and you can always change it back:
| *disabling the NVRAM/ESCD updates feature: Right-click on My Computer,
click
| Properties, click the Device Manager tab, double-click System Devices,
click
| Plug and Play BIOS, and on the Settings tab click to select the "Disable
| NVRAM/ESCD Updates" check box on the Settings tab. Click OK* and reboot.
| [from http://www.aumha.org/kb.htm]
|
| if that doesn't work, MS has a few solutions here:
|
| let us know if any of these work ok?
