I thought that one thing that Service Pack 2 was to do , was 
to disable it. I may be fuzzy on that one though.

You can disable Messenger by downloading and running this 
small
program:
http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

...or manually, by going through Start >> Run >> 
"services.msc"


You'll have to give us some more info on the mouse problem. 
(Is it
USB? PS/2? Only freezes when you go online? Did windows 
update
install new drivers for it?)
