G, Do you have a twin? If so, I want him! Ever grateful to you, Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: Gman To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2009 5:35 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: CORRUPT REGISRTY Jan, I'll send in directions for creating a registry backup in a separate post, since more than one of you are asking about it. From a tech support point of view, a wipe/reinstall of Vista is the absolute best option. It will clean out any corruption or mangled registry settings and take the system back to its 'factory fresh' state. There will no longer be a reason why bluetooth won't work as advertised and the system will feel much more responsive. The reason I don't suggest it more often is that I have this really bad habit of keeping in mind how much work it can sometimes take to get everything reinstalled and back to where the customer wants it to be. :/ As for your thoughts about the backup containing the corruption, you are correct, but only up to a point. It's true that the cause of the issue will be backed up right along with everything else, but we'll never use that part of the backup. Your reinstall of Vista will replace any corrupted system files, your install of the bluetooth drivers will replace any corruption there and you'll get a shiny brand new registry that will also be free of any corruption. The reason for performing the full backup of all files is so that you'll be able to later recover any & all personal files you might wish to save. Since these files can often be found in places other than within the master Documents folder, it makes sense to just save the whole mess and sort through it later. I've sent in at least one tutorial on dealing with this part of an OS reconstruction before (I believe it was during a discussion of Roger's options about a year ago), so I'll try to dig that out and modify it a bit for Vista. If you have any questions before we get started, let me know as soon as possible.
