I'm not sure from the responses that you've solved your problem yet.

Just in case you're missing the obvious, there's a check box on the "Users
and Passwords" Control Panel applet which says "Users nust enter a user name
and password to use this computer." - is that checked?

     Have you just tried to make a new administrator account and sign in on
that account after making a strong password?  Instead on trying to fix the
original account.
