A friend of mine runs Windows 98 OS as well as broadband Cable internet. While on the internet using Internet Explorer her system locked up with a white screen. When she tried to reboot, it came up to the point where it displayed the Windows 98 Screen then a black screen and locked up. Over the phone I had her bring it up in safe mode and it got to the point where the screen does indicate safe mode however it locked up before the desktop displayed. The button bars on the bottom are not available therefore Start is not available. Appreciate any suggested procedures that can be run from a Boot diskette. 1. Would a restore procedure (rstui) be available or appropriate? 2. Will scandisk run from DOS? 3. She says she has an automatic backup but I am not sure what it is, no doubt just a Data Backup. 4. She has McAffee antivirus but has never updated it. 5. The Cable Company in their literature indicate that they have a Firewall but I do not know what it is or how it works. I will be talking to them tomorrow to get more information before I go take a look at her machine. Thanks in advance..
