I think the option is noX11, so something like
configure linux opt noX11

glad to hear that mesa is making progress, it would have been unfortunate if it 
did not work!

I should have asked before, but can you please point me to the correct settings 
for ignoring X and MOTIF at the configuration stage? I have not been able to 
locate them.
