Oh Rayford, how dangerously you and your family had to live if the fan was
smoking!! Certainly, even if there had been a lot of folks with air
conditioning in those days, your poor family couldn’t have afforded it, and you
all were doing the best you could with what you had—but wow, with a smoking fan
which had stopped running, as the motor was burning out, how scarey.

I think we put up with it because that's what there was for us to do. We had no
choice. We were hot, but that's what we expected. I really don't think it's any
hotter overall. It's hotter for Curt and me now, as we live further into the
desert than we did when we were young. Sure grateful for the AC, I'll tell ya
