I’d heard somewhere that he and Snuff Garrett had some kind of issues. I sort
of think Bobby wanted to keep up with the times as he was at the Beatles party
at a London hotel at the end of 1963 and knew given that there were 5000
screaming fans outside the hotel that this was the next trend. Bobby hadn’t
really charted in 1963 except for “Charms” which made it to #13 nationally but
seemed to come and go off of the charts rather quickly, and “Be True To
Yourself” which only made it to #34, and that was a David-Bacharach song which
was pitched too high really for Bobby to sing. Among unreleased tracks was an
even better song by Bacharach and David called “That’s The Way I’ll Come To
You,” and Bobby was struggling to hit that high E note and maintain his breath.
For some reason, Bacharach wanted him to sing higher than his range would allow.
But, Garrett thought he and Bobby were in trouble on the charts, and I think
Bobby wanted to change styles while Garrett would have kept him doing the same
kinds of songs he'’ been doing, which would have been okay with me as I never
got tiredof that formulaic Snuff Garrett-Ernie Freeman (arranger) and Bobby Vee
sound that was so popular, but guess people were getting tired of it by 1963.
Obviously, everything changed in 1964 for so many of our American Pre-Beatles
favorite groups and artists, and while I loved the British sound and certainly
liked a lot of the Motown sound, I missed people like Bobby, Del Shannon, Gene
Pitney, The Everly Brothers, etc., more than words could say. I foresaw it
coming as far back as March of 1963 as “Charms” only got to #30 in the San
Francisco area on one station, K E W B, and didn’t make K Y A’s charts at all.
If you know more about whatever happened between Vee and Garrett, I’d love to
know about it. A former friend of mine who lived in Colorado in her childhood
and moved to Phoenix once her husband got a job was a huge Vee fan like me and
heard an interview essentially describing the falling out, and it was between
Snuff Garrett and a dj. Whose name I’ve long ago forgotten.

Thank goodness, someone from among my acquaintances also gets pedicures and
manicures! I started getting them perhaps six or eight months ago, and I surely
wish I had started sooner.
On the subject of Bobby Vee, it seems to me I heard that he had a falling out
with his producer, Snuff Garon, who in the mid 60s experienced quite a bit of
success producing Gary Lewis and the Playboys.

Hi Walt,
What a big dummy I am! That song is from the Bobby Vee Rarities two disk CD,
and most of the material on it wasn’t released. I’d say that came out in either
1964 or 1965. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the nuggets when I get
home from Nation’s and from my appointment with Tammy and Larry, who do an
excellent job at cutting my hair and who do great pedicures and manicures. You
can sure tell it’s the first, huh, with all the money I’m spending today!

I have a confession to make. I'm jealous of all listers who live in Canada. It's
just not fair! You folks managed to elect Juston Trudeau, and had to put up with
only an eleven-week political campaign to do it!
If there's an advantage to the arrival of August, it is that the political
conventions are done in the U. S., and only a little more than three months of
campaigning are left. When all is said and done, we will have endured something
like a year and a half of this stuff.
I'd say five more nuggets would be a sufficient distraction from politics for

01 Gloria_Estefan_Live_For_Loving_You
This one gets the nod as my favorite by Gloria. I think it came out in the early
90s. But by that time, I had pretty much stopped keeping close track of release
dates.
02 Bobby Vee, I Don't Want To See You Anymore
I'm confident Linda Gehres could confirm this. But I suspect this one came out
in 63 or later. It most definitely is an example of how Bobby's voice had begun
loosing the Buddy Holly quality that had served him so well during the first
four or five years of his career.
03 Jackie DeShannon - A Lifetime Of Loneliness
Jackie didn't write this one. It was instead composed by Bert Bacharach and Hal
David.
04 The Dolphins - Hey-Da-Da-Dow (1964)
I remember this. But I also recall that it wasn't a huge hit for the group.
05 Stan Freberg, Wunerful Wunerful
In the fall of 57, when Lawrence Welk's T V show was a favorite of my parents
and many others, this amazing Freberg parady was also extremely popular.
Next week's nuggets were supposed to have been the last before my computer-free
vacation. But the effect of recent storms on Wisconsin roads has caused us to
cancel this year's trip to the Green Bay vicinity. In addition, it's now seeming
to me that to take September as my break month would rather neatly accommodate
some more house stuff we're planning. Stay tuned. I'll let you know for sure,
and it won't be too long 'til I do it.
