Indeed, there are plenty of network encryption options, but as far as Oracle 
network traffic encryption, ASO is the way to do it.

Or you could go ssh tunneling.  Look at http://www.petefinnigan.com/orasec.htm 
and search for SSH to get to some interesting papers.
