I actually prefer Steve's proposal a lot more.
I have had some horrible email "accidents" in the past,
replying in a "funny" way and pushing the Reply button,
under the assumption I was replying to the sender only ...

FWIW, I prefer it the other way around. The reason I join a
list is to discuss things publicly. That should be the
default.

Mostly though, I just wish all my lists would act in the
same manner with respect to replies :-)
