Hmm, sounds familiar. Wonder who does that... Companies buy a set number of 
hours per month (like 6 or 12).  Usually we do various other bits and pieces of 
project and support work in addition 
to just backing up a lone DBA.

Being the only DBA in an organization is difficult for more reasons than just 
time off.  Most people learn by collaboration, and bounce ideas off each other. 
 With no exchange, you can often find 
yourself with nobody to provide a sanity check, especially in critical 
situations.
