About three months after I got the Optacon I was at work and someone said
there was a bee in the office. Since I have a bee allergy, I switched off
the Optacon and vacated the area, then a few minutes later someone said they
could not find the bee so I returned to my desk. After I started using the
Optacon again I realized what they thought was a bee.

It's sort of like having a fly buzz around you, which certainly is
unsettling to me. BUt as you said, when you are using it yourself you don't
notice it the same way. My X-wife used to make me go in another room when I
was using it.

Subject: the Optacon Buzz

Optacon users are busy responding to the buzz. We feel it as well as hear it
and I don't think it bothers us for that reason. If it were a steady buzz, a
sound that continued at the same pitch and level all the time, I think most
people could tune it out. As it is, the intermitent nature of the buzz would
be annoying to some people. Others would have a legitimate auditory problem
with it. I know that because I could never sit anywhere near a photocopy
machine. The hum of the thing did something inside my head. I could operate
a copy machine and it did not bother me, but I couldn't sit next to one for
any extended period.
I summary, some people who are not directly using the Optacon might find the
buxx unsettling because of something in their auditory mechanisms.
