R,G,B are relative to standard "primaries".  Negative R,G,B values come from
going outside the standard color triangle on the CIE diagram -- i.e., using
a camera that has a wider gamut than a "normal" TV camera -- e.g., a film
camera.

Ditto on the display side.  >4 color displays -- e.g., Genoa -- can provide 
wider
color gamuts than a "normal" TV monitor.

I assume that Poynton could cover this at HPA -- perhaps we need to twist his
arm?
