More important, the iPod is one component of a larger system to manage personal music collections...the portability component. Focusing on one aspect of what Apple has done misses the forest for the trees. An iPod is almost useless without iTunes. But I did learn about another use for the iPod that is very interesting today. Turns out that many people who have adopted the Panasonic P2 solid-state memory camcorders are using iPods to move video files from P2 modules in the field to hard disk. The "portable" P2 drive has a USB 2.0 interface which plugs directly into an iPod, which can ALSO be used as a target disk drive for generic data storage. This is reminiscent of a problem that some retailers experienced with iPods when they were first introduced. Some early adopters figured out that they could plug their iPod into a Mac in a retail setting and copy the applications loaded onto that machine... Just a portable music player... Yeah right.
