How did they get this power?
The answer is simple - they were allowed to build an oligopoly.
How absurd, Craig. They got their power the same way any other very successful
enterprise does. Creating oligopolies is not a prerequisite to market success.
And as technical constraints have diminished, and more media companies have
emerged and are able to compete, some of the old faithful remain powerhouses.
Because they evolved with the markets.
The congloms are not demanding a pound of flesh Bert.
The congloms don't demand a certain amount per MVPD subscriber, per month,
Craig? Of course they do. That's their pound of flesh, assuming they go retrans
consent and not must-carry.
GREAT POINT BERT! I really do care when a network suddenly
disappears, just before one of the few events that I actually
watch from that network, which I am PAYING FOR.
Surprise surprise! That's called market leverage, caused by strong demand. It
has NOTHING to do with your "oligopolies." And yet, you have two obvious
choices. (1) You have to insist to Cox that they charge you more, so they can
pay the conglom more. (2) Or, in this particular case, use an antenna! Do not
complain, allow for the network signal to remain dark ad infinitum, without a
peep from you or anyone else. You have the PERFECT option, and yet you
stubbornly don't use it, and you whine instead! If you weren't such a wuss, the
conglom would have to relent. But being such a wuss, the conglom will naturally
prefer to charge you more. Wouldn't you do the same in their shoes?
There was no shortage of retail and rental outlets for videotapes
and DVDs Bert.
That's exactly the way I see the TV content market too. Multiple sources of
content, with OTA and Internet, but only as long as the Internet is neutral.
Otherwise, it could devolve into the scheme you're still wedded to.
So please explain to us why the content viewed on these TVs -
content that was originally "FREE," has become more expensive,
Earth to Craig: it's still free! It is only for people like you, who insist on
remaining tethered to monopolistic services, that it becomes expensive! Your
delivery pipe is what causes the distortion. Mine does not.
I have no reason to use OTA or the associated OTT sites,
ROTFL. Craig, the reason your head hurts so much is because you keep banging it
on that wall. Get this: it is no one else's fault that it hurts.
Bert
