I suppose that if the designs were such that each company could bring most of its patents to bear in the final unified design, the melding together would work. As Jeroen said, the patent portfolio is all there is anymore of any value for the big CE companies (and others).

The main reason that the designs have not converged are:

1. Patents and the potential royalties from them;

2. Huge differences in the underlying technologies for interactivity - this is an extension of the decade long war by the 800 pound gorilla that lives in Redmond, to kill anything that involves JAVA.

3. The ill advised attempt to placate the gorillas in Hollywood with content management techniques that are not needed and will cause many people to reject both formats.

I have the distinct feeling that if any of these formats survive, it will be Blu-ray. But it could also go the way of L-cassette and the digital compact cassette. Better, but basically no one really cared enough, and they were soon overtaken by events. SACD and DVD-A? Similar sort of thing.

This looks like a classic case of technology searching for a market. It was born out of the inability of the major CE companies to control the technologies in the venerable SD-DVD; so they tried to design HD discs around an advanced laser technology that they believed the developing Asian manufacturers could not replicate.

The window of opportunity is already closing - I can download very good quality HD content via the Internet today. I don't need shiny discs that I watch once and stick on a shelf.
