Hi Jeroen, A good web site which discusses all these issues is digitalradiotech.co.u= k. Actuallt T-DMB is just MPEG4 DAB and has the same spectrumm efficiency= problems and power consumption issues as DAB: which is why you would pre= fer DVB-H also as a radio solution as well in the VHF band because of its= very efficient battery power consumption. As one of the other posters po= inted AAC or AAC+ at 64kb/s simply beats the pants off the old MPEG1 audi= o used in DAB. Its interesting to note that a number of countries are byp= assing DAB for digital radio via DVB-H eg France and Ireland: this makes = sense as a) DVB-H will be churned out for cellular TV b) its very likely = that those who make DVB-T chipsets will simply switch to DVB-H (as its ba= ckwards compatible with DVB-T and c) there will be considerable economies= of scale flowing from use in conventional DTV, digital radio and cellula= r TV using the same base technology. I am very well aware of DRM for LW a= nd SW radio: that will be very interesting as there are propagation probl= ems in those bands designed for very long distance reception. The main pr= oblem is that, apart from spooks and monitoring services, shortwave radio= is not popular in industrialised countries anymore as people prefer loca= l AM/FM stations. It is still very popular in developing countries and if= you don't have internet access. I don't see analogue radio being phased = out anytime soon because of the very large number of radios in use in the= home and because it occupies far less spectrum than analogue terrestrial= TV. Digital radio is likely to coexist side-by-side with analogue radio = for years and only digital radio systems which can be operated by battery= have a prayer of relacing their analogue predecessors. The beauty of international shortwave is that it can be picked up on old = and primitive radios--perhaps even home-made ones--in countries where = truth, money, and access to consumer goods are restricted. At least that was the = premise that I understood when I did some work with VOA. So, am I hearing it right that there is a move afoot to "improve" interna= tion shortwave -- especially in a way that means that lots 'o new, = state-of-the-art, non-home-buildable radios need to be purchased?
