I'm not sure either CE manufacturers or broadcasters are willing to spend much to ensure OTA is good enough to keep people from migrating to cable.

The real problem is that broadcasters have looked to CE manufacturers to spend the money to do R & D to develop a system for OTA. It is not a good investment for CE manufacturers Broadcasters would have done better to hire a R & D lab to do the necessary work to develop a viable system & protect their OTA business.----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Kelly" <dalekelly@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 11:17 AM Subject: [opendtv] Re: DTT tuner design (was Re: Demand for free DTV rising in Australia)Bert wrote:This is why it's imperative to know what the problem is, rather than jumping to facile conclusions. My facile conclusion is that had 8VSB worked from the get-go, nearly aswellas did COFDM, this discussion wouldn't be happening. However, it didn'tbuthad we chosen COFDM in the beginning, we would be a long way down the road to a successful transition, ala the UK. The lack of interest shown for OTA by the CE community and certainnetworks, did not coalesce until they realized what a turkey this system was andthishad little to do with our current receiver front end issues, which are unrelated to modulation. However, that was then and this is now, lets move forward as best we canandmake what we have as good as it can be ..... which will require help fromCEbut which is unlikely to happen. If these receivers are not improved what are the odds that 8VSB will ultimately be successful?-----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Albert Manfredi Sent: Monday, July 02, 2007 6:29 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: DTT tuner design (was Re: Demand for free DTV rising in Australia) Frank Eory wrote:I understand why you might think "what's an extra 4 or 5 dollars on the cost of a TV, if it means the off-air function works reliably?,"butI seriously think you must be joking. An extra 4 or 5 dollars? Maybe an extra 4 or 5 dimes, or perhaps quarters -- and then only if there is a perceived market advantage that can justify a higher retail price.I hope this exchange between Frank and Stephen is enough to explain whyasimple switch to COFDM won't fix a thing in the US DTT market. This is why it's imperative to know what the problem is, rather than jumping to facile conclusions.
