- Comments: "Upon my first binocular scan of distant gulls, I noticed a
slightly smaller gray-brown bird that I took to be an odd-looking immature
gull, and figured I'd get a closer look at it once I walked down that way.
A near-fatal mistake! Before I could scope it, a man and his dog flushed
all the birds, and I realized the bird of interest, now flying, was a large
shorebird. Fortunately it flew west past me, then landed on a closer
portion of the sandbar. The gray-brown plumage, distinctive dark-and-light
head stripes, long moderately curved bill, and blue-gray legs made it
clearly a Whimbrel, and I got three quick distant photos before the dog
flushed it again. This time I observed the bird closely in flight, making
sure it did not have the pale rump of the Eurasian subspecies, and tried to
get a recording of its flight call, a 5-7-syllable series of eagle-like
"ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki" notes. While recording I lost visual track of it, but
felt it had flown east upriver. After posting on OBOL, I walked east and
soon refound the bird on the sandbar out on distant Lemon Island. Three
photos are attached."

- Comments: "Same individual bird as I'd found half an hour earlier at
Broughton Beach, from where it was flushed by a dog. The bird flew to Lemon
Island, where it flocked with gulls and a Sanderling. I called Colby Neuman
and he was able to come out and see the bird -- this one apparently was his
record-breaking #228 for the year for Multnomah County! Photos of the
Whimbrel are on my Broughton Beach list and also on lists by Colby and by
Audrey Addison."
