Yes, to wirelessly transmit your music from your mac to your stereo you need 
the separate Airport Express base station, not the larger Airport Extreme.
The airport card in your mac will connect to this base station.  This base 
station can have speakers plugged into the audio out port or you can run a line 
out of the base station to one of your inputs on your stereo.   You can give 
the base station a name like "Living Room" which will appear in a popup menu at 
the bottom of the iTunes window which you can select instead of the computer 
speakers.
