Thanks for your prompt battery advice.
I shut down, removed the battery, then reinstalled the battery, powered
up, and all was well.
I tried again leaving the plug connected and the battery removed,
reinstalled the battery, and all was well also.
(My battery had begun to show signs of wear. I attached a little car
light bulb to it to drain it absolutely and completely, and now it
holds a full charge again.)
