FromMacNN: Why do we have to test it?
Some users attempting to download and install the Mac OS X 10.5.6
update are are running into critical errors, discussions on Apple's
support forums reveal. The most common problem consists of crashing or
hanging, whether in the middle of an install or immediately
thereafter. The crashes may be accompanied by kernel panics, though
the contents of these panics can vary.
A number of different solutions have been proposed, such as repairing
from the Mac OS X Leopard install disc or downloading the Combo update
from Apple's website, but no universal answers have so far been
discovered; anecdotes suggest that Genius Bar technicians may decide
to have a Mac's logic board replaced. One MacNN reader observes that
in speaking with Apple's phone support, a representative claimed that
Apple is already aware of installation problems.
Less serious issues have included USB devices attached to Apple
keyboards ceasing to work, which may be fixed by connecting directly
to a powered port, such as the ones on the back of an iMac. The update
also appears to have disrupted a large number of Time Machine backups,
failing to recognize drives properly or at all. No fix has been found,
and the problem is ironic, as fixing the detection of Time Machine
volumes was one of the intended purposes of v10.5.6.
