I think we need just a bit more description ...

What does the "small symbol" look like?

What does "in front of the cursor" mean?  Presumably you mean to the left 
of, or to the right of?  Which?

Is the document actually corrupted?  I.e. what do you get when you print it?

You're not talking about the visible formatting marks are you?  Those are 
controlled through the View tab of the Options pop-up.
