Then scan for a virus...cos' SOMETHING it attempting to start with Word that
is not part of the normal process.
You started Word with the /a switch? Cos' 99% of the time I've seen this
problem over the last 15 yrs it has been a macro virus or custom template
(addin) that has code that isn't working right.
As a last test, you can try renaming normal.dot to normal.old and restarting
Word. Maybe your Normal.dot is corrupt...but this is rarely the problem. But
then again...with normal catching so many settings now...maybe it is???

Many thanks, but I tried the no "add-in" test and the problem persisted :(
I can get spelling to work by highlighting the whole text and clicking on
tools/language/set language/mark selected text as English(UK)/default.
However, I have to do this each time! This is effective, but tedious :)
