[mso] Word problem

I am having a problem with Word 2000.
A small symbol has appeared in front of the cursor when I open a new Word
document and I cannot remove it. I have tried highlight and delete but that
does not work.
Word now also leaves a dash or this symbol in every space. Also when I open
up an existing Word document that I know was fine before it too now has
these symbols right through it corrupting the document.
I have tried removing the Word program and reloading it but the problem is
still there.
Can anyone advise me please on how to resolve this problem. Many thanks
