Linda (and Kay),

Spaces affect quite a bit in Access. They require a bit of additional work
when you start to get a little more advanced. A lot of the stuff that
Access does for you automatically are thwarted by spaces. For instance,
when you reference another field in a query or form, Access generally adds
the necessary brackets for you. However, if you have spaces in your field
names these brackets are inserted in the wrong places. Additionally, when
writing VBA code or if you want to try writing a query in SQL (Which is
necessary for some more advanced queries like Union queries) you will run
into slight problems of having to allow for the spaces. It is not a huge
problem but as you get more and more fields it becomes a bigger issue. So
yes, it is primarily a VBA issue, but also an SQL and convenience issue for
newer users.

I hope that clears that up a little.

To add to what Peter said, James wrote an article for ABC on Leszynski's
naming conventions that's really helpful in understanding this....I'd
recommend you read it, Pam:

I'm snowed in here and have nothing to do, so I'm having fun following
this thread and playing around in Access.

KAY...I hope you are reading this (Kay asked me in class last nite,
what happens if you put spaces in field names and I wasn't real
sure....I just knew you shouldn't....now I see that it really comes into
play when VBA steps in...thanks Peter)

Good Morning Pam,

The advise of James La Borde in his previous post should be
followed to the "T". Of course you are one tiny step ahead since
you've already put together your first table.

To summarize Jame's post. You should always DRAW your database
design on paper before you start. That is the absolute first thing
you need to do.
