Hi Janet. The bible in this area is Strunk's Elements of Style. What's
right and wrong always seems to change, so you need to keep uptodate on
what's what....like Dian said, underlines are no longer used much...and
the double space after a period is no longer correct either (tho that's
one's a habit I'm having a REAL problem adapting to....my finger just
wants to hit the dang spacebar twice after a period.) oops...see? I
did it again LOL

Anyway, here's a link to Strunk's. Unless Dian knows better, I believe
this is still considered the last word in styling documents:

But, if I recall correctly (and it has been FOREVER), Strunk focused
more on the style of language and punctuation as opposed to the style of
typography.

I still remember "omit needless words", but does Strunk address ANYTHING
about typography?

BTW, the two spaces after a period are the results of TYPEWRITERS and
not TYPESETTING.

Typewriters were monospace devices. Since a monospace period takes the
same space as a capital W, more separation is needed. But you are
probably reading this in a proportional font. And your computer may even
kern letters. So, today, only one space is needed, because, crude as it
is, today's computers render type closer to typesetting (unless, of
course, you are using a monospace font).

Two spaces were never used in typesetting, only in typewriting. But it
is a habit that is devilish to stop. (I know.)
