Hey Gene...I just saw Vic post this in his WinTips group, so I'm
stealing it and posting it here for you...in case you aren't a member of
that group?

Here ya go:

WinTip&Secret

Someone was asking if it's possible to extract an embedded midi file
from an Outlook Express email message. This is definitely a faq and the
answer is you don't have to extract it - it's extracted automatically
while it plays. The secret is that the midi file is named with a tmp
extension ( ie dat82B1.TMP), not a mid extension, and placed in your
Temp folder, but it only remains in your Temp folder as long as the midi
is playing and the message is opened. As soon as you exit the message
the disguised midi file is gone. So to get it, all you have to do is
open the email with the embedded midi and while it's playing, go to your
Temp folder and copy the tmp file to a different location. Then exit OE
and rename the tmp file with a mid extension, and there's your midi file
out of hiding.
Note - it would be a good idea to empty your Temp folder before doing
this to make it a snap to identify the midi tmp file without any need
to search thro a load of temp trash.

Another even easier method is to simply forward the embedded midi email
message, change it to plain text and make sure "Reply to messages in the
format in which they were sent" is unchecked.
The midi will then become an attachment which you can save to your hard
drive. Note - you do not have to send the message; you just have to hit
the forward button. This works with embedded graphics as well, not just
sound files.
