Pierre,

Oh how I wish that was me sitting on the Newbie's riding car!! It ain't me
sadly, but is our 42 year old son doing the honors. Hey, someone had to
take the photo for the cover so I talked him into running it that day while
I got out my 35mm camera. LS magazine prefers 35mm slides for the cover,
but I expect that will change to digital if it hasn't already.

Indeed, the 1" thick plate was chosen for better adhesion. It may be a bit
heavy because I rarely am able to slip the wheels when starting off. It
does make for quick braking though when you throw the reverse lever over and
open the throttle. Almost like hitting a solid brick wall! Well, maybe not
that solid, but it does stop the locomotive quickly. The locomotive weighs
a little over 300 pounds without water in boiler or tank.

There is a follow up article called "Tuning up your Newbie" in the Jan-Feb
issue of LS. After running at several meets, I learned a few tips to get
better operation and cut down on steam loss at the swiveling steam ports.
If you are unable to get the issue with the operating tips in it, let me
know and I will scan the article for you- - - - -that is if I ever get MY
issue!!! Newbie was conceived entirely for the first time builder and is as
simple as I could possibly make it, therefore it has the oscillating engine
instead of a better slide valve power unit.
