No way Harry! I worked as a volunteer at Crofton in 1980's: so did the
missis.
Until the electric pumps got fitted in the late 50's the engines ran
basically to ensure that there was enough water in the canal for the water
troughs (track pans) on the GWR Berks and Hants line ( the main West of
England line by then) at Savernake summit to be filled. The place was run
by one guy, who fired, wandered round, check the engines were pumping,
fetched coal, and had his 'snap' - often, cheese sandwiches and bottled
beer!

These days, they're all 'elf and safety' conscious: they all go round ina
uniform of white boiler suits and it's regimented to hell compared with
what we ran in the '80s. Seems that they can't run without about 6
people.....and strictly no eating or drinking around the engines. It's
perhaps no wonder that a lot of the volunteers from teh '80s have dropped
out. But them engines 'was built strong and simple and they just keep
going......'
