The GWR used 3 and 1/2 turns on the piston/valve rod, then tighten the gland back into the stuffing box. I have used the same method here on my sweet pea but using a smaller string than recomended. Gives a good seal coatedin graphite grease first to help it seat. my L&Y tank uses O rings, that works well too but you need to ensure plenty of lubricant on the rod. The LMS used cast iron packing. Once this started blowing, that was it. I have never seen it used in our small gauges, would cause a lot of grief I think! Hope this helps, Dave. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Pagett" <john.pagett@xxxxxxxxxx> To: <modeleng@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, March 14, 2005 12:11 PM Subject: [modeleng] Soft Packing Gents, While the list is quiet, how do I pack pistons with graphited yarn? I've tried several times and the steam blows past as if it wasn't there. I've never seen any proper instructions. Thanks, JohnP MODEL ENGINEERING DISCUSSION LIST.
