[modeleng] Guage glass protectors

If you were making a gauge glass protector, what material would you use?
The old idea was to split a thin piece off some mica, as it was heatproof,
and easily available in the days when most stoves used it for their windows.
I doubt that it is available now, or if so, not easy to find.
What are the alternatives?
