Alan,

17" centres (or thereabouts) for the two tinkerbells I am currently 
building. Welded them together in pairs then bored them out.

The size of the ones I've just done, the lathe wasn't an option. So they
were water jet cut close to size, and then finished in the milling machine
with a boring head before pushing the (ball) bearings in.
