First about cspeech:
I used to use it before I started using visiovoice and I did like it, though as I recall it took over resources in a way that made it hard for me to do anything else while it was running. that was on a ppc tiger; never tried it on leopard and/or intel.

As for kafkasdaytime, I googled it and there isn't a dash anywhere. However, it is either down or no longer exists as I was unable to bring it up. I believe the cspeech url was
http://www.kafkasdaytime.com/cspeech

Regarding rate with automator:
I did find that Darcy's method--for example:
[[rate 375]]
did work for me. The aiff file sounded better in iTunes than in vlc when rate was increased. Also the increase was uniform when I used Ryan from Infovox but when I tried it with Alex I found it kind of distorted the phrasing. It was as if groups of words were being speeded up instead of a uniform rate increase and the phrasing was understandable but didn't sound right to me. Because this rate is words per minute, you do have to speed up quite a bit; I had Ryan up to 375 and I think I could understand him faster; not sure what the limitations would be as to how fast you could go.

Hth.
