Hey guys,

I've never experienced any of these weird network issues. I've actually got my machine set to configure TC/IP manually, as I'm running an HTTP file server on My MacBook, and, if I can scrape up the $40 for Nicecast, plan to run a streaming server as well.

As to the Airport icon - *never* seen this behavior, either - recent updates, notwithstanding. Unfortunately, can't offer any explanation, except to say it sounds like it could've been a VO-issue, but wouldn't have the foggiest idea.

Only issue I have, regarding networking, seems to be that when my Papaya 1.3.1 server is running, it'll sometimes go invisible to the outside world. Logging out, then back in again, seems to fix the problem. Sometimes, the server will go a couple days with no issues - other times, it might go invisible several times in a day. I'm thinking it's either an issue with my ISP, or in the MacBook. Could be Papaya itself. Have written them, regarding a few accessibility and technical issues, and, as of yet, have gotten no response back, which has me a bit annoyed! I did pay the $25, as I still think, issues aside, it's worth the bread.

BTW, if anyone cares to check out this little server (it's fully VO- compatible), you can find it at: http://www.lightheadsw.com/papaya/.

Ron J.

Hi Chris,
Ok, I'm not great with networks either (although it has always been windows networks that have been my pitfall) so this is speculatively. In your tcp-ip settings did it say "automatic dhcp" or "dhcp with manual address"? I tried setting mine to the latter, and I got the behavior you did with safari; it fixed itself at the dhcp part of the diagnostics. Of course, on mine it reset the network preferences to "automatic dhcp" and so when I put the computer to sleep and then brought up safari again, it worked fine. So, check that it is set to "automatic dhcp" and that the network you want to join is the first one in the table in airport settings. Then try using safari or mail again, and see if that fixes the problem. If that isn't it, then I don't know if I have any other solutions, but I'll gladly give it another try. :)
Hope that helps,
Greg

I went through the system settings network section and found that everything looked good but, this morning, when I started up Safari, I got the network diagnostics page again and, oddly, after a few screens (not the whole process - just the part up to selecting DHCP) the network was recognized and Safari and now Mail are working properly.

I'm wondering if there is some place where I can select the default network and the like. I deleted all networks other than the original Airport which seems to do things properly after the changes I make in diagnostics.

I've been programming computers as a hobbyist since 1971 (I was 11 years old) and professionally since 1979. Printers and networks have been my enemies throughout my entire carrier as I always seem to break them.

Hi,
If you go to network undersystempreferences, you can check your airport settings. You will have to go under advanced to make sure that everything looks sensible for airport and tcp-ip etc..

Hi,

This morning I wrote that every time I turn on my Mac, I need to go through the network diagnostics by hitting the button in Safari. It seems that I also need to do this if I leave the Mac sitting untouched for a while.

How and/or where can I set the configuration that works as the default so I needn't go through this all day long?
